Graeme
P Chatham
Graeme
Chatham, is a director of the Company and Chairman of Graeme P Chatham
Limited, the leading Honda
and Skoda
car dealerships which has two showrooms in Abbeyhill and one in
Sighthill.
Graeme started in business in lock up premises in 1962 as a motorcycle
and three wheeler car repairer. In 1965 he acquired the Suzuki motorcycle
agency and, having moved to a large former grocers shop at Abbeyhill,
added the Reliant car and Honda bike and car franchises in 1969.
In 1973 the rapidly expanding business was relocated a short distance
away to a self built showroom, which remains the site of the principal
Chatham Honda showroom in Edinburgh today - Graeme’s first
foray into the building industry. Business flourished, and Chatham
Honda soon became one the largest Honda car and motorcycle dealers
in the UK. Before abandoning two wheel trading in 1986, Graeme tackled
the problem of the huge casualty rate amongst first time riders,
finally persuading government to introduce mandatory training for
all new bikers.
In order to diversify his business interests, Graeme also became
involved in property, carrying out his first renovation project
in 1976 and registered Graeme P Chatham (West) Limited as a separate
company to purchase, renovate and resell mainly tenemental, flatted
properties in central Edinburgh. He has also built up a substantial
property portfolio through the Chatham Discretionary Trust which
is principally involved in owning and leasing residential properties,
mainly to universities.
